REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsSept 26 (Reuters) - Approvals on new exchange-traded funds, including bitcoin spot ETFs, could face delays if the U.S. government shuts down next month for the fourth time in a decade. "I'm not sure if ETFs that have been filed for approval can move forward with the government shutdown," said Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi. "This would just delay yet another decision on the never ending spot Bitcoin decision," said Todd Sohn, ETF and technical strategist at Strategas Securities. "ETFs are just pass through vehicles ... impact on the underlying markets will obviously impact ETFs," said Hector McNeil, co-CEO and founder of HANetf. "People will also probably pause if they're about to launch (new ETFs) and wait for steady waters."

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Newly publicly traded company Arm Holdings is poised to be added to popular indexes such as the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100, although inclusion in the S&P 500 is unlikely, analysts said. Shares of the British chip designer closed up 24.7% in their Nasdaq debut on Thursday, giving it a market value of $65 billion. “The Nasdaq 100 is the most likely widely followed index for the company to get added into,” said Todd Rosenbluth, Head of Research at VettaFi. However, inclusion in the Nasdaq 100 may take time for Arm shares. Inclusion of Arm shares in the S&P 500, which is the standard benchmark for the U.S. stock market, is far less certain, analysts said.

For active traders who like to time buying and selling around seasonal events, the next few weeks are Market Timing Heaven. The volatility is encapsulated in one of the more enduring seasonal trades: Sell Rosh Hashanah (which begins at sundown Friday this year), buy Yom Kippur (Sept. 25). Traders sell positions due to seasonal weakness at the start of Rosh Hoshanah, then return to the market after Yom Kippur. The period from Yom Kippur to Passover, which starts on April 22, 2024, is traditionally an up period, good for an average gain of 6.9%. It means market timers expecting seasonal weakness for the next few weeks are also expecting seasonal strength in the fourth quarter.

The Arm IPO is here, but many ETFs will not be buyers

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company licenses its processorIPO and tech enthusiasts are excited about the Arm Holdings Plc initial pubic offering, and with good reason: it's the first big tech IPO in more than two years. However, some investors who would like to get immediate exposure to the Arm IPO through ETFs may be disappointed. However, this particular IPO highlights several difficulties that even large companies like Arm have in acquiring a broader ownership base through ETFs. The first problem is that Arm is not a U.S. company, it's British — which generally would exclude it from the S&P indexes. BOTZ has been a key beneficiary of the AI advance, garnering $594 million in inflows this year, according to FactSet. While many investors see AI as a tech play, Todd Sohn, ETF and technical strategist at Strategas Securities, believes that the benefit of industrials is an under-the-radar narrative worth taking a second glance at. And because data is what's driving AI, Maier said, larger companies like Amazon , Alphabet and Meta Platforms best retain that type of exposure. "Right now, [data] is what AI is, while we're trying to figure out where AI is going," he said. But for investors looking to diversify beyond the tech wave, Sohn affirmed that industrials are poised to benefit from the rise in AI-induced efficiency and productivity in robotics and automation companies.

The 2023 stock market rally caught many investors off guard, with mountains of excess cash sitting in money market funds. "Money market balances are building up, which is unusual given how much the stock market has rallied recently. And history suggests that money market funds are not always fuel for a buy-the-dip trend to support a late-stage rally. Through that lens, the growth of money market funds in 2023 can also be linked to the regional bank crisis earlier this year. Clissold said discussions with wealth advisory clients suggest that "some of that money market fund money does leak into the stock market," albeit over time.

Investors are voting with their cash in August and shifting money away from funds that focus on stocks, according to Strategas. The S & P 500 has slumped 4% in August, as the stock market appears to be caught in a late-summer doldrum and interest rates have spiked. Money market funds took in +$40 Bn last week, plus ultra-short duration bond ETFs saw over $1 Bn inflows on Thursday, a threshold usually reserved for uneasy environments," Sohn said in a note to clients Tuesday. Money market funds have been particularly popular this year, as high interest rates have made them attractive places for consumers and investors to park their short-term cash. Money market assets have increased $749 billion over the past six months, according to Strategas, which includes the period of the regional bank crisis earlier this year.

.SPX 1M mountain S & P 500 1-month Since then, it's been one excuse after another. Everything Tuesday was down about 1.0-1.25% midday, including the equal-weight S & P 500 (RSP) the market-cap weighted S & P 500, the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ), and the small-cap Russell 2000, but most ended down a fraction of a percent. At nearly 5% yield, money market funds are still sucking in money, even with the S & P 500 up 18% this year. I mentioned Monday that money market inflows reaccelerated last week: $21 billion worth of inflows were added, according to Goldman Sachs. "The pace of money market flows reflects a larger apathy towards stock," Todd Sohn from Strategas told clients.

ETF strategies to broaden beyond the mega-cap tech rally
  + stars: | 2023-07-25 | by ( Kevin Schmidt | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Investors looking to diversify beyond the tech sector runup this year can consider a handful of alternative ETFs to reduce ballooning concentration risk, said one ETF strategist. "The consternation over the mega-cap tech names driving the market — I understand it," Todd Sohn, Strategas ETF and technical strategist, told CNBC's Bob Pisani on "ETF Edge" on Monday. "It's a very under-the-radar fund," Sohn said. "[When] you think of Vanguard, you think VOO [and] VTI , their fixed-income products. For tactical investors looking to diversify into a more balanced fund, Sohn recommended the RSP, which tracks the equally weighted performance of all S&P 500 stocks.

The S & P 500 is up 2.3% this month, but the market really is broadening out , and former market leaders (tech and consumer discretionary) are lagging. You might be surprised to discover that about 60 of the 100 companies in the Nasdaq 100 are not technology companies. The Nasdaq 100 includes Airbnb, Marriott, Costco, GE Healthcare, Ross Stores, and Honeywell. First Trust Nasdaq-100 Ex-Technology ( QQXT ) tracks an equal-weighted index of Nasdaq 100 stocks that excludes technology companies. The ProShares S & P Ex-Technology ETF ( SPXT ) tracks a market-cap-weighted index of U.S. large-cap stocks, excluding firms in the technology sector.

After a string of up days, the old market leadership of technology and consumer discretionary is looking tired, and that is probably a good thing. Since 1950, August is the third-worst month for the S & P 500, while September is the worst month. That is "historically extreme," Todd Sohn from Strategas told me, though it is consistent with coming off major market lows. A torrid two-month rally has lifted the S & P Technology Sector (XLK) by 16%, but tech has mostly been for sale in the last few days. Still, for investors in the S & P 500, McClellan says no one should be surprised to see a summer correction in the next month or so.

The excitement around artificial intelligence and the surprisingly strong U.S. economy has pushed one major tech ETF to a new all-time high, even as many investors remain skeptical of this year's rally. The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) closed at $178.24 per share on Monday, setting a new record high. So that strength is being reflected with the sector at a new high," Strategas ETF strategist Todd Sohn said in an email. The Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT) , which has nearly $54 billion in assets under management, has also seen outflows this year. The iShares U.S. Technology ETF (IYW) has brought in cash but still trails in overall assets with less than $14 billion.

The Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) , which has even heavier exposure to Big Tech names, has brought in $5.8 billion of its own. "It's not really the overconcentration in the big names that worries me. It's actually the concentration in the big names compared to their earnings contribution," said Oktay Kavrak, director of communications and strategy at Leverage Shares. Whether you're passive or active, you probably have enough exposure to Nvidia and Apple and Microsoft," said Todd Sohn, ETF strategist at Strategas. ETF experts Todd Sohn and VettaFi's Dave Nadig believe a second winning half is in store for technology and artificial intelligence plays. Sohn, Strategas' ETF and technical strategist, particularly likes Roundhill Generative AI and Technology ETF (CHAT). Sohn also recommends Global X Robotics & Artificial Intelligence ETF (BOTZ) for those interested in introducing more industrials into their portfolio. "I like [BOTZ] if you want to get away from tech because you already have tech exposure in your portfolio.

Despite a strong first half performance for the broad equity markets, ETF equity flows have been subpar this year. The big money has gone into Treasury ETFs and money market funds. The company’s weighting in the S&P 500 has swelled to 7.6%, the biggest of any one stock in the history of the benchmark index, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices. If shares of Apple keep rallying, that could hurt the results of active fund managers, who strive to beat indexes such as the S&P 500 or Russell 1000. The cost of limiting Apple shares may be particularly high for fund managers this year, given the stock's swelling weight in indexes. “Fund managers at their own peril don’t hold Apple and a handful of stocks just like it at index weight or about index weight,” Morris said. The stock is still his firm's fourth-largest holding, even though at 4% of the portfolio, it puts it underweight Apple versus the S&P 500.

The iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) and Invesco S & P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) have attracted inflows of over $4 billion and about $1.8 billion, respectively, so far this month, according to FactSet. Both funds provide investors a way to get broad exposure to the stock market while reducing the impact of names such as Nvidia and Alphabet on their portfolios. "Interest in funds outside of core S & P exposure has increased with notable inflows and volumes into the equal-weight S & P 500 (RSP) and Russell 2000 (IWM) recently. These funds — along with a host of other non-Tech exposed ETFs — are seemingly a preferred way to play a catch-up trade," Strategas ETF strategist Todd Sohn said in a note to clients Tuesday. Another option for investors looking to diversify away from large technology companies could be international funds, Sohn said.

The biggest momentum ETF, the iShares MSCI USA Momentum ETF (MTUM) , rebalanced in the final days of May and now has Nvidia as the biggest holding in its portfolio, at about 6.3%. How the index works The MSCI USA Momentum Index attempts to capture hot stocks, with the hope their rally will continue over the coming months. There are other momentum funds with different methodologies that rebalance more frequently, such as the Invesco DWA Momentum ETF (PDP) and the Alpha Architect U.S. Quantitative Momentum ETF (QMOM) , which have outperformed MTUM this year, but those two funds are still trailing the S & P 500.

As big-cap tech approaches new highs, some put more emphasis on equal weight. With more than $7 trillion indexed to the S & P 500, this is not an academic debate. With the S & P 500 up 8% this year, the average stock, as represented by the S & P Equal Weight ETF (RSP), is up a measly 0.5%. The RSP has underperformed the market-cap weighted S & P 500 month-to-date, quarter-to-date, and year-to-date. An argument could be made that active managers invest more like an equal-weight index.
The Vanguard Small-Cap Index ETF (VB) is down 10% over the past three months, and the SPDR S & P Regional Banking ETF (KRE) has plunged 40%. VB 3M mountain Passive small-cap funds like VB have been hurt by the regional banking crisis. "Of the 130+ passively managed small-cap ETFs, the average Financials sector exposure is 16%. Small-cap funds is one category where active funds should have plenty of room to grow, Sohn said. Research shows that very few active managers can consistently beat index funds, and the index funds are almost always cheaper for investors by expense ratio.
Tech stocks with healthy cash flow have been the big winners so far this year, and those names are also dominating the growth indexes. One way to dial back your exposure to mega-cap tech while keeping bets on growth is through mid-cap growth ETFs, according to Citi. Another benefit of the mid-cap growth area is that is not as reliant on tech stocks as the large-cap growth bucket, he added. The Citi note highlighted several ETFs that track the mid-cap growth space, including the iShares Russell Mid-Cap Growth ETF (IWP) , the Vanguard Mid-Cap Growth ETF (VOT) , and the Invesco Nasdaq Next Gen 100 ETF (QQQJ) . These funds do have less concentrated exposure than other popular growth ETFs.
EWQ ALL mountain The iShares MSCI France ETF is trading at close to its all-time high. To be sure, the outsized rallies for luxury stocks — and new highs for the fund — could also be a sign that a reversal is near, at least in the short-term. However, Roth MKM chief market technician JC O'Hara said in a note to clients on Sunday that it appears that luxury stocks still have room to run. "We first highlighted the strength of the Luxury Goods market in early December. Since that time, the S & P Global Luxury Goods Index has risen +13%, versus the S & P 500, +1.8%.
Buffer ETFs, which are encompassed by defined outcome funds, offer participation in stocks or bonds while maintaining a level of downside protection — protection usually paid for by a cap level on potential upsides. For investors easing into the defined outcome ETF space, Day said, the Innovator Defined Wealth Shield ETF (BALT) is the more conservative strategy. "Every time the market has corrected the 20% buffer, BALT has really guarded investors against losses," Day said. But to counter those concerns, Sohn explained, market volatility in recent years has created an environment tailored for buffer ETFs to prevail. Now you're seeing options-related strategies to get that income through the equity market."
